Latte Art Throwdown: A Battle of Coffee Creativity

Sixteen baristas, one shared machine, and a single-elimination bracket judged on the pour alone. Come watch, or put your name in the hat.

We push the tables back, roll the espresso machine into the middle of the room, and let sixteen baristas from shops across the city fight it out over a six-ounce cup. It is loud, it is friendly, and it is the best free night of coffee you will find all month.

The format is single elimination. Two competitors pour side by side on the same machine with the same milk and the same blend, and three judges score the pour on contrast, symmetry, definition, and degree of difficulty. No latte art stencils, no etching tools, no second attempts. Whoever wins the round moves on; the other one gets an Americano and a seat at the bar.

How the night runs

6:00 PM — Doors and sign-ups. Sixteen slots, first come, first served, $10 entry.
6:45 PM — Bracket drawn, practice pours on the competition machine.
7:00 PM — Round of sixteen begins.
8:30 PM — Semifinals and final.
9:00 PM — Prizes, then everyone helps put the tables back.

Who should come

Anyone. You do not need to compete, and roughly two thirds of the room never does. If you have never seen a tulip poured from six inches up, it is worth the trip on its own. If you do want to compete, bring your own pitcher and cloth; we supply everything else.

First place takes home a home espresso grinder and a year of free beans. Second and third get a kilo a month for six months. Entry is free to watch, drinks are half price all evening, and the pastry case stays open until we run out.
